The Need for
Each Christian Believer to Study Christian Doctrines Seriously
“Therefore
go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I
have commanded you, And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the
age.” (Matthew 28:19-20) This is the very word of Jesus Christ before He ascended
into heaven. Many of us know this as the Great Commission.
The Great Commission proceeds from Christ’s authority. It is Christ’s command
that we go and make disciples of all nations. The verb phrase “make disciples”
here is typically rendered “teach” or “train” (study notes from Spirit of
the Reformation Study Bible, p. 1597). Christians are entrusted with the
commission to teach and train those whom God has predestinated in eternity and
has effectually called to be children of God. The training of the disciples of
God includes “baptizing them” and “teaching them to obey” (v.20). “Disciples are not just taught cold truth, they are taught to obey”
(study notes from Spirit of the Reformation Study Bible, p. 1597).
In order for disciples to obey, they must first know what Jesus taught. In
other words, it is necessary to know the truth before one can obey. Doctrine
and obedience cannot be divorced. There is no obedience without proper
doctrine, and there is no authentic doctrine that is not followed by obedience.
However, sadly, the divorce of doctrine and obedience is a common phenomenon
among Christian believers nowadays. Today, we often hear people utter such
remarks as “I am not interested in theology and doctrine, this is cold fact.
Teach me to become a pious follower of Christ” or “Stop rattling on cold
theology and doctrine, these are not practical. What believers need is not
impractical theology, what believers need is application – how to know God’s
will, how to bear good testimony, how to become a dedicated Christian….” Many
Christian believers are separating doctrine from obedience, or theology from
life. Attitudes as such are incorrect. How can one study calculus if one does
not even know basic arithmetic or geometry? How is one able to drive a car
safely if one never knows the different parts and functions of the car (e.g.
steering wheel, brake pedal, acceleration pedal, gear, etc.)? In the same way,
how can one glorify and serve God without even knowing who God is?
Theology is, in essence, knowing God. Theology is not
about deep philosophical arguments or cold truth, theology is the study of God
– what man is to believe concerning God, and what duty does God require of man.
Theology is not impractical; it is the essence of your belief. Paul says that
we are to “be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and
understanding” (Col. 1:9 NASB). In 2 Timothy 1:12, Paul says that he knows whom
he has believed. We are not to merely approximately know whom we have believed;
rather, we need to have clear true knowledge of God as our creator, lord and
savior. Dr. Sinclair Ferguson says that the most important task of a Christian
is to know God. In the preface of
A
wise man has said that your Christian life is like a three-legged stool. The
legs are doctrine, experience and practice (that is, obedience), and you will
not stay upright unless all three are there.
It is a great pity to see
that today many Christians have little regard for solid biblical truth.
Experience becomes the focus of some (usually charismatic) and practice becomes
the object of concentration for others (usually those who always ask questions
like “What is the application that we can draw from this passage?” etc.) We
fail to honor the Holy Spirit as teacher or lord or leader. There is little
life and power in our testimonies and ministries. As a result, some seek and
experiment with various church growth methods that are mimicking of
contemporary trends in society. Many of the church growth methods are mere
advertising and marketing strategies. Fragmented biblical passages are quoted
and their meanings twisted in order to fit into the framework of secular marketing
strategies. Books that bear claims to being manuals for revival and church
growth become bestsellers in the market. Methods and strategies, instead of the
Holy Scripture, become the way to revival (both church and personal revivals).
There is no other alternative to true, biblical revival unless the body of
Christ has a renewed passion and attitude towards God’s word. Mr. Alex Tseng,
chairman of Postmodern Reformed International Ministries Online (PRIMO), writes
Instead
of accommodating what society demands, the Church needs to stand up to
challenge society and tell the world right from wrong. In doing so, we must
stand firm in faith, and we must have a solid, comprehensive, consistent, and
thorough understanding of biblical doctrines. Only then will we be able to
bring out the power of God's Word and Spirit in evangelism and cultural mandate
(www.herewestand.org).
In short, a renewed proper
attitude towards God’s word is essential. This is God’s command.

Les miserable
Les
Les
But
remember, my brother
See in this
some higher plan
You must
use this precious silver to become an honest man
By the
witness of martyrs
By the
passion and the blood
God raise
you out of darkness
I have
brought your soul for God
How can I ever face my fellow men
How can I ever face myself again
My soul belongs to God, I know
I made the bargain long ago
He gave me
hope when hope was gone
He gave me
strength to journey on
Who am I?
Who am I?
Fantine
Take my hand and lead me to
salvation
Take
my love for love is everlasting
And remember,
The
truth that once was spoken
To love another person is to see the
face of God
God gives us hope when hope is gone
God gives us strength to journey on
